The renowned late 1960's group The Doors, who influenced so many people with its messages of open-mindedness, political consciousness, and peace, was organized in Los Angeles. It for that reason came to be closely connected to the West Coast rock landscape of the time. On a Doors vinyl record, an individual only takes in the sound of a highly unified outfit that could easily have known each other for a long time. Little does the general listener guess, though, that these men were from different regions of the United States and had dissimilar backgrounds.
Lead vocalist Jim Morrison, whose very name often brings to mind the city of L.A., was not actually born there, but on the opposite coast of the nation, in Melbourne, Florida. He went through his childhood moving from location to location, on account of his father's naval service, and was quite interested in books and poetry from all through history from a young age, which inspired him to write verses and music himself.
Keyboard player Ray Manzarek called the Midwestern locale of Chicago home. A prospective lawyer, he ended up dropping out of U.C.L.A.'s law program, then tried out their film school, then finally went in a separate direction altogether. Music, it happened, was his true calling, with the boogie pianists he had liked in his youth serving as an inspiration for him to play himself.
Percussionist John Densmore was born and lived his boyhood in Maine. He was taught primarily in a jazz style of music, had been intrigued for some time by Eastern mysticism, and was extremely environmentally aware for the majority of his life.
The only actual Los Angeles native was guitar player Robby Krieger. An avid surfer from his adolescent years onward, he started to experiment with music at age 10, when he endeavored to play the trumpet. He went on to engage in blues on the piano, then moved on to guitar, on which he dabbled in several varied styles before permanently going with rock in his late teens.
The men in The Doors, even in view of their separate upbringings, were the same as each other in certain ways. They had all happened upon and been affected by things far removed from most Americans' daily experiences. The various paths Manzarek had attempted in life made him well-rounded. Krieger's wild musical quest led to him being extremely experienced in aural art forms, and his escapes into the waves gave him an additional perspective of the earth apart from human civilization. The curiosity about mysticism and the earth that Densmore had translated into spirituality and better understanding of man's primeval existence for him. Morrison's interest in writing, specifically philosophical pieces, led him to question existence and look for its fundamental truths. The group's easy formation and production of hallowed vinyl records was feasible because the members all grasped each other's desire for an extraordinary life outside of societal conventions. Hence, it is no surprise that they displayed the unity so evident in their compositions; they were all, at the end of the day, kindred spirits.
